体会：可以说，这是一篇以嗅觉为核心构筑的小说，核心就在那片突然出现、百寻不见、又突然消失了的木樨香味。之所以选择气味作为线索，或许就因为气味的这种特性：即便你如此真切地嗅到了它，但只要不是目之所见、手之所触，它依然是一片飘渺的虚空，并没有一个实体，因此也无法被证实曾经存在过。就好像一个人投入这座大城市（指纽约），一颗沙粒投入这片无底的流沙，这阵香味投入带家具出现的房间中，也找寻不见、终于消失了。

只是这个意味深长的结尾，是要有足够的人物——其性格、尤其是心理状态，和情节——尤其是内在的心理变化作为铺垫的，如果没有这样的铺垫，结尾处的突转容易变成一个缺乏内在逻辑统一性的巧合，一个作者的小技巧，造成一些特别的效果——但不容易打动我们这些世故累累的读者的内心。现在，既然我已经在他两处呼唤时被击中落下眼泪，那么于结尾处所看到的就不仅仅是对一个残酷无情的大城市之揭示的最终完成了，而更是整个“找寻”过程的完成——在大城市中找到了女孩子的下落、在房间里找到了香味的来源（并以此证实找寻者对于她曾经存在的感觉）。如此，这难道不是一个真正的结尾么？

O.Henry was born in Greensboro, North Carolina. His father, Algemon Sidney Porter, was a physician. When William was three, his mother died, and he was raised by his parental grandmother and paternal aunt. William was an avid reader, but at the age of fifteen he left school and then worked in a drug store and on a Texas ranch. He continued to Houston, where he had a number of jobs, including that of bank clerk. After moving in 1882 to Texas, he worked on a ranch in LaSalle County for two years. In 1887 he married Athol Estes Roach; they had one daughter and one son., he died in New York on June 5th 1910.

在剧场碰了一鼻子灰后，他坐上马车。又问车夫1000美金该怎么花。车夫让他去开一家酒馆，这自然也不能合他的意。他中途下车后，看见有个盲人在卖铅笔，他就问盲人同样的问题。盲人打开钱包，里面有银行储蓄本，上面显示欠银行1785美金。帮盲人还钱？不可能。吉利恩又返回车上，吩咐再去律师事务所。

还没等到律师拿起信封来作出最后判决，吉利恩突然伸手拿回信封，悠闲撕成碎片，放入口袋。满面笑容说，不必麻烦两位大驾了。然后承认自己去赌马，1000美金已经输掉了。然后高高兴兴吹着口哨就走了，留下律师在后面悲伤地摇头叹息。（ 他为什么要说谎？把本来可以到手的巨款随意放弃？损失惨重还能高兴吹口哨，难道他疯了不成？ ）
小说到此结束。那接下来会怎么样？
律师一定会将5万美金交给海顿小姐。但是海顿小姐能够收下吗？她应该会告诉律师那1000美金的事情。这可就轮到律师大吃一惊了！竟然有那样的事？那该怎么办呢？按照补充说明的规定，5万美金只能交给吉利恩啦！但他会收下吗？如果他真要这笔钱，只要当时把信封交给律师就可以了呀，何必那么麻烦？由此可见，他是真心要把钱给海顿小姐的。到底是谁来拿这笔钱？似乎唯一完美的解决方案是吉利恩和海顿小姐喜结良缘。吉利恩说他爱海顿，那么海顿爱吉利恩吗？
我猜想有可能是这样的： 叔叔在临终前，已经谋划好一切了。他非常喜欢海顿，盼望侄子能够娶她。但他也深知吉利恩，必须给他一个最严格的考验。要是他经不起考验，钱就归海顿所有。活该吉利恩倒霉，这个婚姻也就没有意义了。要是吉利恩竟然经得起考验呢？那就太好了！老人当时应该亲口将计划透露给海顿小姐了。于是当海顿小姐拿到1000美金时，她已经清楚知道自己的终身可以托付给他了，所以她太惊喜，以至于激动得脸色苍白，而连说“抱歉”是因为简直不相信幸福来得那么突然！不得不赞叹老人家简直是料事如神，精明透顶啊！
