在劇場碰了一鼻子灰後，他坐上馬車。又問車夫1000美金該怎麼花。車夫讓他去開一家酒館，這自然也不能合他的意。他中途下車後，看見有個盲人在賣鉛筆，他就問盲人同樣的問題。盲人打開錢包，裡面有銀行儲蓄本，上面顯示欠銀行1785美金。幫盲人還錢？不可能。吉利恩又返回車上，吩咐再去律師事務所。
律師見到他，露出討厭的神情。他卻高高興興問律師，叔叔那位秘書海頓小姐除了得到一枚戒指和10美金之外還有什麼嗎？結果得到的答復是Nothing （沒有）。（ 這個答復很平常，是不是？難道沒有什麼奧妙在其中？海頓小姐是個什麼樣的人？ ）
離開律師後，吉利恩馬上坐車去叔叔家。看見穿著黑衣服的海頓小姐在書房裡寫信。（她竟然為老人哀悼呢！）他告訴她，叔叔的遺囑裡面有補充條款，另外留給她1000美金。（為什麼要說這樣的假話？把錢給海頓小姐有什麼打算？）海頓小姐拿到錢時頓時 臉色蒼白，驚訝萬分 。此時他假裝看向窗外，好像漫不經心低聲地對她說，你知道我是愛你的。海頓小姐說，抱歉。吉利恩說難道不行嗎？海頓小姐又說，抱歉。（ 說抱歉是什麼意思？抱歉我不知道你愛我？或者是假裝沒聽見說抱歉？意味深長啊 ！）
吉利恩在叔叔家書房寫了如何使用1000美金說明的條子，放入一個信封就走了。（條子上寫的是： 羅伯特.吉利恩叔叔支付1000美金給海頓小姐，為了她永遠的幸福，這是老天欠這個世界上最好，最親愛的女士的錢 。）

還沒等到律師拿起信封來作出最後判決，吉利恩突然伸手拿回信封，悠閑撕成碎片，放入口袋。滿面笑容說，不必麻煩兩位大駕了。然後承認自己去賭馬，1000美金已經輸掉了。然後高高興興吹著口哨就走了，留下律師在後面悲傷地搖頭嘆息。（ 他為什麼要說謊？把本來可以到手的巨款隨意放棄？損失慘重還能高興吹口哨，難道他瘋了不成？ ）
小說到此結束。那接下來會怎麼樣？
律師一定會將5萬美金交給海頓小姐。但是海頓小姐能夠收下嗎？她應該會告訴律師那1000美金的事情。這可就輪到律師大吃一驚了！竟然有那樣的事？那該怎麼辦呢？按照補充說明的規定，5萬美金只能交給吉利恩啦！但他會收下嗎？如果他真要這筆錢，只要當時把信封交給律師就可以了呀，何必那麼麻煩？由此可見，他是真心要把錢給海頓小姐的。到底是誰來拿這筆錢？似乎唯一完美的解決方案是吉利恩和海頓小姐喜結良緣。吉利恩說他愛海頓，那麼海頓愛吉利恩嗎？
我猜想有可能是這樣的： 叔叔在臨終前，已經謀劃好一切了。他非常喜歡海頓，盼望侄子能夠娶她。但他也深知吉利恩，必須給他一個最嚴格的考驗。要是他經不起考驗，錢就歸海頓所有。活該吉利恩倒霉，這個婚姻也就沒有意義了。要是吉利恩竟然經得起考驗呢？那就太好了！老人當時應該親口將計劃透露給海頓小姐了。於是當海頓小姐拿到1000美金時，她已經清楚知道自己的終身可以託付給他了，所以她太驚喜，以至於激動得臉色蒼白，而連說「抱歉」是因為簡直不相信幸福來得那麼突然！不得不贊嘆老人家簡直是料事如神，精明透頂啊！
